The Healing & Conversion of John Garbutt at Our Lady Queen of Peace House of Prayer Achill John Garbutt (Church of England) came to the House of Prayer with his wife, Naomi, on a pilgrimage in October 1997. About 3 years previously, when he was 28 years old, he was involved in a freak accident when four vertebrae between his shoulders were crushed, as were vertebrae in his neck. Surgery was too dangerous. He also developed Osteoarthritis in his lumbar region. All of his injuries were such that and he was in severe pain, was unable to hold a cup and he frequently suffered from involuntary shaking. For the enormous pain resulting from the damage he was given heavy doses of drugs. "The discomfort and severity of my condition" he says, "seemed to make it impossilbe for me to travel to the House of Prayer." His mother-in-law, having been to the House of Prayer in September, gave him a Matrix Medal and Holy Water from the font there and said "You must go to the House of Prayer, there is 'terrific' peace there." His pilgrimage group travelled by boat to Ireland however John and Naoimi decided to fly to Knock, meeting them there. On Saturday 18th October 1997, they attended Mass in the House of Prayer. As an Anglican, John was unable to receive Holy Communion, but he says "I felt a great yearning at Holy Communion time to go up to the priest for a blessing. As it was extremely painful to move I was helped to the Altar. Hunch backed from the accident I could not look up properly, but inwardly, as the priest blessed me with the Blessed Sacrament I felt I was being healed." "When I returned to my seat I felt a tapping between my shoulder on the injured part of my spine. I asked my wife "Who is tapping me?" She said, "There is no one near your back, no one is tapping your back." It happened a second time and the sensation travelled towards my neck. I dismissed what my wife said and I felt someone was tapping my back. This sensation was repeated outside the House of Prayer just before Christina prayed with me in the afternoon. I was helped into the front hallway. I was stooped with the pain from the spasm, which was brought on from the exertion of being helped. I was crying from the pain because I could not move. Christina prayed with me, but I don't remember a word she said as I was gripped in such pain. When the prayer was finished, it took me fifteen minutes before I could move." "My wife and I were taken back to our B&B so that I could lie down because of the extreme agony of pain I was in. Sitting on my bed intending to use the Pain Machine strange things began to happen. My wife noticed a change in my body, complexion and appearance. The sickly grey colour began to go from my face as she looked in wonderment. My hands went from yellow, greyish colour to red pink natural colour in front of our very eyes. I began inwardly to feel excited, but also frightened because of the change coming over me. Every part of my arms, neck and legs felt bigger, and the scabs began to fall off my right leg. They had accumulated there due to lack of circulation. I could take off my socks, something impossible before, following the pain of exertion. When I did, my feet were the same healthy pink colour as my hands had become, previously. My right foot had been white hard skinned and scabby, (resulting from the previous poor ciruclation) I was saying inwardly "It cannot be!" Just then the minibus arrived to pick up my wife. The driver got a shock. I was as healthy as she. I could go without walking stick, brace or anything. I felt a great draw to pray before the Blessed Sacrament, and this has continued since. Since my return home I visited my doctor. While she was examining me she said "This is strange." As she continued the examination she said "Your back has returned to normal." Because my vertebrae had been crushed and pushed to one side, they had been fused. Since the healing, the doctor declared "Your spine and ligaments are now straight. Your muscles are now perfect." She made me stand and bend forward arching my back to further examine my spine. Then she said, "There is mobility in each joint of the spine, your shoulders are also completely in line." Prior to the healing I had been left hunch-back by the accident due to the fusion of the vertebras contraction of the muscles in my back, neck and shoulders. She added "I can now see clearly by your posture and eyes that you are completely healed." In her statement Maria Fletcher, John's doctor comments, "His latest scan explains why his mobiity has been restored, however it clearly does not explain how. This is inexplicable in medical terms, I feel. However, the evidence is living proof, is it not!" After these events John had a deep desire to become a Catholic, which he did after completing instruction in the faith. In 2000, the case of John Garbutt, along with three other outstanding healings received further independant medical examination and doctors concluded that they merited to be submitted to Church Authorities. Testimony of John Garbutt about his Healing & Conversion at Our Lady Queen of Peace House of Prayer Achill John Garbutt (right) at the House of Prayer Achill after giving witness to his healing following the prayers of Christina Gallagher and Fr Gerard McGinnity John Garbutt, who after these events became a Catholic, gave this testimony in 1997 "I, John Garbutt, (who am Church of England) came to the House of Prayer with my wife, Naomi, on a pilgrimage organized from Lancashire on Friday, 17 October, 1997. About three years ago, in a freak accident, four vertebrae between my shoulders were crushed. I was twenty-eight years of age then. I was given heavy dosages of drugs to kill the enormous pain resulting from the damage. " The vertebrae crushed were between the shoulder blades called T5 and T6 as well as T8 and T9 (thoracic vertebrae). Feeling was diminished to a large extent in my right arm and stabbing pains constantly in my right arm would occur, sometimes in my left. So great was the pain in my right arm that I would drop things, could not hold a cup of tea and very frequently involuntary shaking of the arms and hands would come over me. As the condition deteriorated my legs were affected to the extent that, particularly on the right side, I would so lose feeling that I had to reassure myself that my leg was still there! "On further examination it was discovered last June that my neck also was damaged. The vertebrae in the neck were affected in a way similar to what happens through whiplash. The consultant explained that this had resulted as a knock-on effect when I had fallen to the floor at the time of the blow to my back. As injury was in two areas operation was considered too complicated. The simplest everyday tasks or activities such as lifting a cup could set off a spasm or violent shaking and then the pain would become unbearable. The discomfort and severity of my condition made me say I could not travel to the House of Prayer at this time but hopefully next Spring (1998). "My mother-in-law who had returned from visiting the House of Prayer in September had brought me a Matrix medal and some Holy Water from the font there, had said, "You must go to the House of Prayer for there is 'terrific' peace there. So, as we had put off a decision it seemed unlikely that we could still be included in the pilgrimage organized for overland. We, my wife Naomi and I, thought "Why don't we fly to Knock airport and meet with the group and join them for the pilgrimage to the House of Prayer?" "I should add that when the first scan was completed, the consultant (a rheumatologist) verified that another knock-on effect of the initial injury was the presence of osteoarthritis in the lumbar vertebrae. What this felt like was the presence of a tight 'belt' of pain around the waist. The slightest movement can cause a dart of pain traveling from head to toe, stressing the entire body, especially on the right side and affecting the area behind the eyes particularly. I was stooped with the pain from the spasm which was brought on from the exertion of walking forward. There were tears in my eyes because I could not move. I was wearing the brace on my neck which I always had to wear when moving about. When Christina prayed with me she knelt down in front of me, closed her eyes and started to pray but I cannot remember a word she said for I was gripped in such pain. When the prayer was finished it took me fifteen minutes before I could move. "My wife and I then began to head back to my B&B accommodation so that I could lie down and also recover from the pain. On sitting down in my room intending to use the TENS (i.e. Transtaneous electrical nerve stimulator) to reduce the pain - it could take one or two days on the machine to undo the pain of such simple movements as I had been through going along to the House of Prayer -, but then strange things happened, my wife noticed a change in my body complexion/appearance. I felt a great draw to pray before the Blessed Sacrament. This has continued since I have now commenced instruction in the Catholic Faith with a view to being received into the Catholic Church. "Since my return home I visited my chiropractor. While she was examining me she said, "This is strange!" As she continued the examination, she added, "Your back has returned to normal." And she burst into tears. "Because my vertebrae had been crushed and pushed to one side, they had been fused. The chiropractor had been unable to identify each vertebra spinal process to treat them. Since the healing, the chiropractor declared, "Your spine and ligaments are now straight. Your muscles are now perfect." As she used spotlights she said she could see the muscles clearly outlined. She made me stand and bend forward arching my back to further examine my spine. Then she said, "There is mobility in each joint of the spine. Your shoulders are also completely in line." She added, "I can now see clearly by your posture and eyes that you are renewed. I shall have to report this to the British Chiropractor Association as this healing is medically impossible!" Read John Garbutt's testimony in full The testimony of his own physician, Dr Maria Fletcher is below Dr Maria Fletcher L.C. (W.S.C.) M.B.A.A.C. 30th November 1997 To whom it may concern, John Garbutt first attended my practice for treatment on 06.02.95. He presented for treatment as a result of having been butted by a horse, between his shoulder blades, directly onto his Thoracic spine. The symptoms he presented with included neck and shoulder pain radiating into both arms; though predominently his right; ‘pins and needles’ into both arms; severe pain in his mid thoracic region; low back pain – bi-lateral; ‘pins and needles’ and numbness in his right leg; headaches. Examining him I found range of movement in his neck was reduced in flexion to 25degrees before pulling and pain kicked in over his right shoulder blade. Extension reduce to 30 degrees rotation left and right limited – left Rotation caused pain in right shoulder and was limited to 20 – 25 degrees, right rotation slightly better to 30 degrees. On palpation there was marked tenderness over his lower cervices spinous processes and para vertebral muscles. Pain on light palpation of thoracics from T3 – 8/9 intensely so over T5/6 the adjacent muscles being in spasm. Both left and right trapezius very sore and tender, no shoulder rotation on right without inducing pain in arm and shoulder immediately. Left shoulder rotation not too bad though restricted, through hypertonicity in left trapezius. Pain on sternum with catching of breath sometimes. Sneezing and coughing causing pain in sternum; neck and shoulder. In his lumbar area pain and tenderness over L4/5, erector spinac in tension. Straight leg raise ok though this did change negatively over the coming weeks with 45 degrees causing referred pain in his left let to foot, reducing to 25 degrees. Numbness in leg to foot. Foot cold and beginning to catch his foot occasionally. Postero-anterior pressure on spinous processes of L4/5 causing discomfort. Full passive intervertebral movements were not able to be tested for range in areas of problems because of pain. Flexion of lumbars not forced as difficulty began at 45 degrees, getting worse beyond and causing pain in thoracics and cervicals. On sensory loss in left leg there was deficit along the posterior calf central to right lateral and foot covering heel, arch and ankle, also superior surface. Cold to the touch. This neuropathy indicates entrapment at root level of common sciatic nerve, I felt this was likely to be a lesion at L5/51 level. Clearly John was in a very bad way, the quality of his life was affected tremendously, even his getting on to the treatment couch was carried out slowly and cautiously, depending on whether the day was bad or worse, pain wise, I suppose. The pathological changes associated with such a traumatic injury do not show themselves in all their glory for months, sometimes years, after the injury. They evolve. Even if a patient was to remain bedridden and virtually motionless, the effects on boney and soft tissue would develop over time. However with a person who is basically mobile, as John was, the changes can be accelerated, despite him living a sedentary life. He became affected by violent spasms in the rhomboid and longissimus muscles, which for his wife and parents to witness must have been very frightening. His body would shake violently, uncontrollably, inhaling was painful and he would breath shallowly. On these occasions he was barely able to walk, certainly not without the help of his Father to support him Naomi being too petite to be able to support him fully. In this state John could not get up the few steps to my clinic and I would have to see him in my home. We quickly recognised that a single wide band of muscle in spasm, was responsible for the violent shaking, once that was released, the shaking would stop. In the two and a half years that I have known John I have watched him become more and more withdrawn. Just as his debilitating condition was taking a greater hold on his body – the degenerative changes were getting worse, so too were the limitations imposed on him by his conditions, which effectively altered his disposition. From being basically an easy going, gentle bantering type of person he slowly became more and more melancholic. So much so that I nicknamed him Victor (as in Victor Meldrew), which he took in good humour. I saw a distancing grow between him and Naomi – all of this I have seen a number of times before, in people having to live with chronic pain and disability. His mental approach mirrored his physical self – hunched up, slow walking, unsmiling, due to his continual pain and discomfort. All spontaneity had been removed from his life, as any movement was deliberate and prepared for. I never saw him drive his care, and he was always accompanied by his wife or parents on a visit to the clinic. I treated John the day before he was heading for Ireland. I considered that the treatment he was receiving for myself, was purely about maintaining an even keel, or at least trying to. The damage sustained in the accident to his thoracic joints would to through their changes despite. Treatment could balance the rest of his body, thereby reducing more damaging changes. I felt not a lot could be done with the area T5/6 – 9. However the muscles in this area required regular care to maintain their health, as they too had been injured in his accident, continued treatment reduced fibrous tissue building up and causing further mechanical problems. He continued to have pain to discomfort in his lumbars and his left foot remained pale and cold. Upon their return, Naomi rang to arrange a visit. Although I was aware John and Naomi were going to Ireland, I simply thought it was pilgrimage that Naomi was making, as I knew she had recently been received into the Roman Catholic faith, and she was still bubbling with excitement about her conversion. It did not occur to me that John was going for any other reason other than to accompany Naomi. I wasn’t prepared for what I saw or felt when John arrived for his treatment. I greeted Naomi, and then I heard someone rushing up the stone steps outside the office, John had arrived larger than life, standing in the doorway. He’d actually rushed up my steps! Instead of the usual labored step by step ascent he usually makes. The first thing I noticed is that he appeared to have grown. He was straighter instead of hunched up, the 2nd thing I noticed was the smile on his face, he looked ten years younger, facial muscles relaxed. I’ve never seen John smile so widely. It was wonderful just to see him smile, then he walked towards me, picked up and swung me around. I was utterly dumbfounded. All of those times previously when had sometimes winded just in over stretching to reach hi waling stick. I was itching to check his spine. By the time, Naomi was giving me a brief outline of events in Ireland. I wanted to get in there and palpate, test it and check it out. As the man that was here in front of me, bending lifting crouching, was nothing like the man I had seen and treated one and a half weeks earlier, not the man whose MRI scan from July gave a very poor insight into his mechanical health. Checking his spine was a unique experience in my 7 years in practice. Every detail, written or unwritten, regarding the feel and appearance of that patients spine is registered mentally. You become so familiar with that part of their body that any change, even if you immediately do not know what or how, strikes you. With John, I immediately noticed that he had ‘wings’ that is shoulder blades – for the first time ever with John the spine of his scapulas were clear and contoured. The tight sheath of muscle protecting his damaged back, had relaxed totally and utterly. Full flexion/extension and lateral rotation restored. Incredibly enough I was able also to identify the spinous processes between T5-7, which were shrouded in such dense fibrous tissue previously (consistent with a direct impact injury), none of the previous pain or tenderness on palpating. Interestingly, T6 is still subluxed – posteriorly proud. I have suggested to John that perhaps this fellow was already ‘out’ before his accident. It certainly is causing him no neurological disturbance or affecting his muscles. His mobility is fully restored – in getting in and out of chairs, standing for lengthy periods, bending, walking running, etc. His latest scan explains why his mobility has been restored, however it clearly does not explain how.
